Virgil
Scott developed a childhood love for Musical Art and as a
youngster learned to play the saxophone and clarinet. A lifetime
New Yorker, Virgil started his first Big Band when he was
seventeen! He went on to earn both Bachelor’s and Master of
Arts Degrees from Hunter College and SUNY Purchase.
Scott has
always been active as a Musician. During his career he has
played with top Dance and Show Bands including those of Tommy Dorsey, accompanying stars such as
Johnny Mathis, Vic Damone, Barbara Streisand and Sammy Davis Jr.
He also
worked with Tony Bennett, and was the lead Flutist with the
original Paul Winter Concert.
In forming
the current Virgil Scott Swing Orchestra, Scott seeks to bring a
modern sound to Big Band Music while maintaining that Big Band
Style. Rather than merely replay songs from a former era, Virgil
rearranges the music, incorporating new digital technology and
adding electric guitars, bass, and keyboard. Scott is emphatic
about having, an “-in-your-face-style- “that
makes us different from the rest!
Commenting on
the Bands success, Virgil “sees the band playing ten to twenty
years from now.” He states “I see the music business
improving, with more people listening and dancing to good
quality music.”
